I am Kate Gundersen, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, first licensed in the state of Louisiana in 2001, then in Tennessee in 2009. I attended Grinnell College for my BA and went on to earn an MSW at Tulane University in 1998. In-between undergraduate and graduate programs, I was a Peace Corps volunteer in West Africa, an experience that greatly altered my world view and compelled me in the direction of social service rather than fine arts.
I'm a Cognitive-Behavioral therapist by training with additional intensive training in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. I do, however, employ other therapeutic approaches as needed--determining in each situation what might be most helpful to move someone in a positive direction.
I work with adults and adolescents, 13 and above. Most people I see are experiencing symptoms of depression or anxiety, or they are seeking help with difficult life transitions (divorce, grief, aging, parenting). Additionally I have extensive experience working with chronic mental illness and with individuals diagnosed with personality disorders. I have a natural aversion to viewing complex life situations from a diagnosis-focused perspective. Instead, I collaborate with clients to generate options: to empower and provide coping strategies toward facilitating a happier and more fulfilling life.
I am in network for various insurance companies: BlueCross BlueShield, Cigna, Value Options, Magellan, Amerigroup, BlueCare. I also accept payment on a sliding scale.
